A series of alumina-molybdenum specimens containing 3 to 25% Mo have been prepared by the adsorption of molybdenum from solutions of ammonium paramolybdate onto ..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. X-ray diffraction studies have been conducted on the specimens, and the uv spectra of the aqueous and ammonia extracts have been recorded. Chemical and spectral analysis of them and the x-ray diffraction data give reasons to postulate the presence of aluminum molybdate, isopoly compounds, and molybdenum oxides on the surface of calcined specimens. The amount of Al/sub 2/(MoO/sub 4/)/sub 3/ formed is limited by the calcination temperature, while the concentration of isopoly compounds and MoO/sub 3/ increases with an increase in the molybdenum content of the specimens. A definite correlation is observed between the catalytic activity and the compounds formed, which form sites which are active in the hydrogenolysis of the thiophene after activation in a reducing atmosphere.
