Oil exploration, prospects along northwest flank of Great South basin, New Zealand

Oil and gas production in New Zealand is from fields on and off the west coast of North Island. The offshore Maui field has estimated ultimate recoverable reserves of 5 trillion CF of gas and about 230 million bbl of condensate; the onshore Kapuni field has estimated ultimate recoverable reserves of 356 billion CF of gas and 41.3 million bbl of condensate. The onshore McKee oil field is expected to go on production in 1984 with estimated ultimate recoverable reserves of 16 million bbl of oil and 14 billion CF of gas. Oil and gas shows were encountered in the Toroa-1, Pakaha-1, and Kawau-1A wells. Seismic studies revealed a subbasin northwest of the Kawau-1A well within the broad Great South basin that would place the Late Cretaceous oil source rocks into a more mature and favorable environment for the generation of oil. One of the most favorable shallow water locations for oil exploration in the Great South basin is that region in the path of oil migration between the subbasin with oil generating potential and the seeps on Stewart Island.
