The encouraging results of the sparse drilling activities performed to date have served to point out the hydrocarbon potential of the vast sedimentary basins of western Australia, described by Weaver Oil and Gas Corp. in this three-part series. The thick and geologically diverse pay sections, the large gas and oil reserves already indicated, and the relatively high discovery ratio have attracted worldwide interest to the state. Western Australia's major proven reserves lie along the northwest outer continental shelf - a potentially productive area with a northeast-trending chain of basins and arches that extends over 1200 miles. This fairway contains the Rankin platform area with some 15 trillion CF of recoverable gas reserves, the Barrow Island oil field that promises over 250 million bbl of oil, and the Dongara gas field holding over 400 billion of CF of gas. Although exploratory efforts have focused so far on the north west shelf, all the major sedimentary basins of the state contain the geological elements necessary for commercial-size hydrocarbon accumulations. The government is actively encouraging exploration and development projects through a system of favorable economic incentives.
