Energy straggling of 3--36-MeV /sup 12/C ions in aluminium

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., A; (United States)

The energy straggling of partially stripped /sup 12/C ions incident at energies from 3 to 36 MeV on a thin Al foil has been measured. The results are interpreted as due to a combination of the statistical processes of collisional energy loss and charge exchange. Analysis of the observed straggling in terms of these processes in the energy region 20--36 MeV leads to values of the electron-capture and -loss cross sections which are consistent with Bohr's simple theoretical description.
