Petroleos Mexicanos is using bivalent inhibitors to arrest corrosion in a 250-mile sour-gas pipeline in Poza Rica, Mexico. The agent used is effective in preventing electrochemical corrosion and steel embrittlement. Since no hard and fast rules exist for determining the proper inhibitor for a given pipeline system, the Instituto Mexicano del Petroleo affected a preliminary selection by means of static and dynamic tests. The quantity of inhibitor to be injected also had to be determined. Field experiments verified the adequacy of the inhibitors selected.
