Identification and toxicity of fractionated-shale-oil components

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6379616
A procedure for the separation and identification of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs) in shale oil is presented. This procedure comprises two steps. First, the shale oil is separated into fractions according to ring size on a Chromosorb LC-9 normal phase column. Then each of these fractions are separated into individual components and identified using an analytical reversed-phase Ultrasphere ODS 5..mu..m column. In addition, toxicity studies are carried out on each fraction obtained from the amine column to indicate which class of PNAs warrants special attention and analysis. The results of this approach are reported here.
