Hydraulic rotary percussion drilling: two drills in one

The driller who meets alternately hard and soft or abrasive and non-abrasive rock formations in quick succession has got problems. Secoma (France) has developed what it claims is the world's first dual-function hydraulic drifter. The RPH 200 is capable of drilling in both the rotary and rotary percussive modes. Switching between drilling modes is achieved by simply changing the drill bit and shifting a selector lever. The choice of rotary or rotary percussive drilling enables the RPH 200 to drill efficiently, through higher drilling speeds, in soft horizons. The unit is designed for small diameter holes from 24 to 45 millimeters (1 to 1.8 inches) and is equally suited to drilling blast-holes or holes for roof bolting. The RPH 200 not only comes into its own in coal mines which have excessive stone in the seams; there are always headings to be driven in stone in most coal mines, and to have both rotary and rotary percussive drilling modes available in one machine ensures maximum penetration rates regardless of the conditions.
