New offshore seismic energy source creates implosion

Journal Article · · World Oil; (United States)

An apparent breakthrough in the search for a strong mechanical seismic energy source for offshore gas and oil exploration has recently been field-tested with favorable results. This new system is called the HYDRO-SEIN. It utilizes a high-pressure air-driven piston as a power source. Acoustic energy is derived in a unique manner-- from an implosion or massive cavitation. This implosion results from water flow into a massive cavitation or void created by separating 2 large metal plates at a high acceleration rate. Since no explosion nor combustion is involved, there is no gaseous residue to create a secondary pulse or ''bubble effect.'' This seismic source may thus be operated at any water depth considered best for the particular area.
