Unique offshore seismic energy source introduced

A faster, more accurate marine seismic survey technique currently is being studied by representatives from a number of major oil companies. The new system, based on the use of an ''implosion'' to extract acoustic energy for the signal needed to penetrate rock strata below the ocean floor, is called Hydro-Sein, and has been developed by Marine Geophysical Services Corp. of Houston. The acoustic echo is created when a round metal plate, fitted snugly inside a stationary chamber, is detached by a compressed air- driven piston. The plate separating from the chamber causes a cavitation in the water. The water rushing into this cavity ''implodes,'' resulting in a signal that is as great-- and in some cases greater--than those emitted from conventional energy sources. Since no combustion is involved, for the heat generated creates at best a low grade steam inside the ''void,'' there is no leftover effect when the water mass comes together. With no bubbles to create a secondary pulse, the source may be used at any water depth desired.
