Gulf Research and Development Co. HDS. a new hydrodesulfurization catalyst

Conference · · AIChE Pap.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6368274
A new hydrodesulfurization catalyst designated as Catalyst B represents a new class of residue desulfurization catalysts with activity and resistance to coke deactivation that are superior to catalysts containing molybdenum with cobalt and/or nickel, and unlike other residue desulfurization catalysts, has relatively large pores and can also perform well in metals-limited service to achieve increased desulfurization severity or lower operating temperatures. These claims have been proven in pilot-plant studies and commercial use at the Okinawa Sekiyu Seisei refinery in late 1975 to reduce the sulfur content of Kuwait 38% reduced crude from 4.5% to < 1.2%, at a Mitsubishi Oil Co. unit to reduce the sulfur content of Kuwait atmospheric residue from 3.9 to 1.0% in annual cycle operation, and at an Idemitsu Kosan Co. Ltd. unit at Aichi to reduce the sulfur content of Kuwait atmospheric residue from 3.8 to 0.1% for six-month cycles. The improvement was estimated on the basis of results with Catalyst A or the design catalyst. Two new commercial units in the engineering and startup stages, respectively, will use about 50-55% of Catalyst B, and all operating plants have tentative plans for its use in the near future.
