Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (IKC) has developed a new residue hydrocracking process (Idemitsu R-HYC Process) employing fixed bed reactor to produce good quality middle distillate. IKC set out to develop R-HYC Process in 1979 as a member of Research Association for Residual Oil Processing (RAROP) under the auspices of the Japanese government. Through the research of promising catalyst from 1979 to 1982, IKC succeeded in developing promising catalysts for the cracking of residue and production of good quality middle distillate. Since 1982, demonstration operations have been carried out using an existing commercial residue hydrodesulfurization (HDS) unit in Idemitsu with R-HYC Catalysts, and catalyst improvement has been also carried out during the demonstration. This paper describes the features of Idemitsu R-HYC Process, the dynamic simulation program of fixed bed reactor which was developed as a guide for the demonstration operation, and the demonstration results.
