New salicylato complexes of cobalt(II) and nickel(II), viz., 2Co(sal) x Co(OH)(Hsal) x 6H/sub 2/O and 2Ni(sal) x Ni(OH)(Hsal) x 6H/sub 2/O, where Hsal and sal denote singly and doubly deprotonated residues of salicyclic acid H/sub 2/sal, have been isolated and characterized. The processes in the stepwise thermal decomposition of these compounds during their continuous heating in air from room temperature to approx. 1000/sup 0/C have been characterized on the basis of a study of the derivatograms, the IR absorption spectra (400-4200 cm/sup -1/), and the x-ray diffraction patterns of the hydroxosalicylato complexes of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) and the products of their thermal conversions.
