Consumers Power Co. and Southern California Gas Co. report on the planning, implementation, and current status of the gas industry's Space Heating Efficiency Improvement Program (SHEIP). Over 58 utilities are evaluating the safety and effectiveness of various retrofit options such as vent dampers and restrictors, intermittent ignition devices (IID), furnace derating, heat recovery, duct insulation, and the elimination of duct leaks. Early reports indicate that the most popular of the proposed options are IID (48% approval), derating (19%), vent restrictions (15%), and automatic vent dampers (7.5%). Decisions on complete furnace replacement must consider proper sizing, improved steady-state efficiency, proper vent connection, and damping.
