Intense beams of light ions are being transported over distance of 1-2 meters in plasma channels in progress toward inertial confinement fusion driven by particle beams. This paper reports experimental work at Sandia Labs, Where ions have propagated in wire-initiated and laser-initiated discharge channels. Particular emphasis is given to studies of laser initiation and channel stability.
