Fluid-bed boilers steam ahead

Journal Article · · Eng. News-Rec.; (United States)

After more than a decade of testing and development, fluidized-bed combustion systems are rapidly gaining acceptance in the industrial-boiler marketplace and are being sold in increasing numbers. Still battered by past recessions and energy-conservation programs that prompted industry to shun new purchases and rehabilitate old boilers, boiler suppliers and market analysts are not expecting business to boom in the near future. But interest in fluidized-bed boilers is being sparked by their ability to burn cheap waste fuels or high-sulfur, high-ash coal cleanly without the addition of expensive air-pollution-control equipment. At least 16 vendors now offer systems. Refinements and the development of second-generation fluid-bed technology now give potential buyers a proven alternative to conventional coal-burning boilers.
