Transportation of natural and other gas by pipeline cathodically protected transmission lines

The US Materials Transportation Bureau has promulgated an amendment to its monitoring requirements for testing short sections of transmission pipelines on a sampling basis to determine the effectiveness of cathodic protection in controlling corrosion. Each pipeline must be tested at least once a year at intervals not exceeding 15 mo. At least 10% of all separately protected pipeline sections of up to 100 ft must be surveyed each calendar year so that all these sections are tested in each ten-year term. This amendment would have a minimal cost impact on the pipeline industry and could even save it $1 million/yr. This rule becomes effective December 20, 1979.
