A new gamma camera for positron emission tomography

Conference · · IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6359543
A new gamma camera for Positron Emission Tomography has been developed. The camera consists of two barium fluoride scintillation crystals sandwiched between three low pressure photosensitive wire chambers. For 511 keV annihilation radiation, the detection efficiency is 42% and the position resolution is 5 mm (FWHM) with a time resolution of 4 ns. The camera is insensitive to low energy scattered radiation. The merits of the detector for application in a PET system will be discussed.
