Santa Fe Drilling Co. has developed a conceptual design for a giant all-weather semi-submersible rig with unprecedented dimensions and loading capabilities. The twin-hulled, self-propelled unit, known as the Santa Fe DP-120, is designed to operate continuously for up to 120 days without resupply of drilling consumables. Designers say it is the first semi yet designed to combine a 6,000-ft water depth capability with a variable deck-load capacity of 7,000 tons and a total variable load capacity of 13,000 tons in transit. The unit is designed for normal drilling in 70-kt winds, 35-ft significant waves and 2-kt currents.
