The U.S. Materials Transportation Bureau has promulgated a rule which would consolidate its hazardous materials regulations. The revised regulations would require the use of a numerical identification system for hazardous materials transported in commerce; compliance with rules on the transportation of hazardous wastes; the identification of, and discharge notification for, hazardous substances; listing of certain forbidden materials; provision of proper shipping names for organic peroxides; inclusion on shipping papers of the technical names of certain hazardous components of certain materials; and optional use of certain United Nations shipping descriptions. Tables list such hazardous materials as acetaldehyde, benzene, nitric and sulfuric acids, and xylene, giving proper shipping names, hazard class, identification number, and packaging, quantity, and water shipment requirements. These final rules will become effective on 11/20/80, and may be complied with, if preferred, beginning 7/1/80.
