Superplasticity in Pd{sub 40}Ni{sub 40}P{sub 20} metallic glass
- Tohoku Univ., Sendai (Japan). Inst. for Materials Research
Application fields of metallic glasses have been limited because of their small size and the lack of workability and machinability. Recently, a number of metallic glasses having a temperature range of supercooled liquid above 60 K before crystallization and high glass-forming ability have been discovered in Zr-, Pd-, La-, Mg- and Pt-based alloys. The authors have reported that the Zr{sub 65}Al{sub 10}Ni{sub 10}Cu{sub 15} metallic glass exhibits superplastic-like behavior at high strain rates above 1 {times} 10{sup {minus}2} S{sup {minus}1} and at temperatures above the glass transition temperature. The Zr{sub 65}Al{sub 10}Ni{sub 10}Cu{sub 15} metallic glass is, therefore, promising for the production of a large-scale bulk metallic glass by powder consolidation and the shaping of complex-shaped components. In this study, the authors will report the superplastic-like deformation behavior of a Pd{sub 40}Ni{sub 40}P{sub 20} (at.%) metallic glass.
