Metal nitrene (or imido) chemistry has expanded since olefin amination with d{sup 0} osmium(VIII) reagents was achieved. Zirconium nitrene monomers display insertion reactions and activate CH bonds, and a d{sup 6} iridium nitrene, Cp*IrNBu{sup t}, inserts a variety of electrophilic organic substrates. Nonetheless, well-characterized electrophilic nitrene complexes remain elusive. The authors report a convenient synthesis of cationic carbonyl nitrene derivatives of tungsten(IV) whose chemistry suggests electrophilic character at nitrogen.
