Air pollution damage surveyed among crops

Journal Article · · Sci. Agric.; (United States)

A statewide survey of air pollution damage was conducted in Pennsylvania in 1969 to determine the nature and extent of crop losses. This first estimate of losses showed that air pollution has been responsible for approximately 3.5 million dollars in plant damage alone. Vegetation damage was caused by several air pollutants. About 82% of the losses were caused by oxidants originating from the photochemical oxidation of car exhaust and from industry. Oxides of sulfur were the next most important in causing damage to crops, with lead ranking third. A limited amount of damage was also observed from minor pollutants such as dust particles near quarries and similar plants, misuse of herbicides, and ethylene. Vegetables, fruits, and field crops were the most seriously affected.
