Effects of air pollution on crops and livestock

Journal Article · · Proc. National Conference on Air Pollution; (United States)
OSTI ID:5023509
An attempt is made to focus attention on the major air pollutants causing damage to agricultural crops, livestock, and forests. Of a wide variety of plants damaged by SO/sub 2/, the most sensitive are alfalfa, barley, cotton, and coniferous trees. Fluorides also cause damage to plants and livestock. Photochemical smog is a serious new air pollution threat that is causing significant crop losses along the northeast seaboard and in metropolitan areas from coast to coast. The two most important photochemical oxidants are ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate, which primarily injure plant leaves.
