Reactions of M Cl, M = Li-Cs, with Y and YCl3-Y2O3 or YOCl at 950C resulted in high yields of layered M/sub x/ YClO with three types of structures. These structures have been identified with the aid of Guinier powder photographs, and the structure of two types have been established by a single-crystal x-ray study of one member of each. Crystal parameters of the intercalates are presented. Diffraction powder patterns of samples exposed to air indicated that the samples hydrated with little or no oxidation.
