Interstitial and intercalation chemistry of the double-metal-layered yttrium monochloride
The incorporation of guest impurity atoms is demonstrated in the chemistry of yttrium chloride(YCl). These new phases are all synthesized as black plates by stoichiometric reaction of metal powder or strips with the trichloride and M/sup I/Cl(M/sup I/ = lithium-cesium (LiCs)), chloride yttrium oxide (Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/), scandium chloride (ScCl), yttrium oxychloride (YOCl), or carbon (C) within sealed tantalum tubing at 950/sup 0/C for 1 to 3 weeks. The new phases are Li/sub 0/ /sub 09/YCl, ScClC/sub 0/ /sub 5/, M/sub 0/ /sub 1//sup I/YClO, and M/sub 0/ /sub 2//sup I/YClC/sub 0/ /sub 5/. The yields for all the compounds except Li/sub 0/ /sub 09/YCl are greater than 90%. The products are stable at high temperatures and well crystallized, in contrast to many reported intercalation compounds. The structure refinement is discussed. 1 figure.
