Ethylene hydrogenation over supported nickel-palladium catalysts

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)
Preliminary tests showed that the crystallite size of silica-supported Ni/Pd alloys (10% loading, reduced at 500/sup 0/C) increased from approx. 50 A. to over 500 A. as the silica surface area decreased from 430 to 3 sq m/g, and that it was impossible to produce a series of well-homogenized alloys on silica, especially at high nickel contents. Hydrogenation of ethylene at -100/sup 0/C on two series of catalysts (one hydrogen-reduced at 500/sup 0/C; the other hydrogen-reduced at 200/sup 0/C, air-calcined at 800/sup 0/C, hydrogen-reduced at 450/sup 0/C) showed higher activities for all alloy compositions than for the pure supported metals, as was previously found for Ni/Pd films The calcined catalyst series had a distinct maximum at 70% palladium. The activity decrease at high palladium contents may be due to poisoning by dissolved hydrogen.
