The present technology of vanadium production involves oxidative roasting of converter slags with addition of CaCO/sub 3/ followed by extraction of the vanadium compounds formed. Not enough is known about the part played by calcium and manganese in phase formation during oxidative roasting of vanadium-containing slags. The authors experimental samples were obtained by the solid-methods. The original oxides were Mn/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ of ultrapure grade; CaCO/sub 3/ was of analytical grade. The phase composition of the synthesized samples and of the products of oxidation of vanadium-containing slag was studied with the aid of the DRON-2 diffractometer, using Cu K..cap alpha.. radiation. Distribution of the elements between the products of oxidation of vanadium-containing slag was investigated with the aid of the CAMECA MS-46 electron microprobe analyzer. It follows from the authors diagram of phase equilibria in the system V/sub 2/O/sub 5/-CaO-MnO-Mn/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (Fig. 1), that calcium and manganese metavanadates form a limited series of solid solutions with a wide homogeneity region: Ca/sub 1-x/Mn/sub x/(VO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.62) and Mn/sub 1-x/Ca/sub x/(VO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.32). In the quasibinary join Ca/sub 2/V/sub 2/O/sub 7/=Mn/sub 2/V/sub 2/O/sub 7/ (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.60). It was shown that a solid solution of the composition Ca/sub 3-3x/Mn/sub 3x/(VO/sub 4/)/sub 2/, where 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.10, is formed on the basis of calcium orthovanadate. A new compound of garnet structure, Ca/sub 2.25 + x/Mn/sub 2.25 - x/ x V/sub 3/O/sup 12/, where 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.75, was discovered in the system studied.
