It has been established, in principle, that solid solutions can be formed on the basis of CdCr/sub 2/Se/sub 4/ under combined cation substitution in the range of compositions 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.4 for Cd/sub 1-x/Mn/sub x/Cr/sub 2/Se/sub 4/, 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.3 for CdCr/sub 2-x/V/sub x/Se/sub 4/, and 0 less than or equal to x, y less than or equal to 0.2 for Cd/sub 1-x/Mn/sub x/Cr/sub 2-y/V/sub y/Se/sub 4/. Manganese ions isomorphically replace cadmium ions in tetrahedral positions, while vanadium ions are distributed over the cadmium and chromium sublattices.
