Tosco Corp. sponsored a study by Epply Institute for research in Cancer and BioResearch Consultants, in which 1500 mice and hamsters were exposed by skin, ingestion, and inhalation to large amounts of oil-shale products, including oil-shale rock, crude shale oil, processed shale, coke, and particulates from the processing of oil-shale rock. According to environmental health director of Tosco, R.M. Coomes, the results clearly demonstrated that the rock and processed shale did not cause cancer... (and) no unusual or chronic toxic effects were found. Tosco and Atlantic Richfield Co. are partners in Colony Development Co., which is palnning a 50,000 bbl/day plant in Colorado.
