A discussion is presented on the progress being made by the Oil Shale Corp. (TOSCO) on techniques that can be used to recover oil shale in the western United States. TOSCO has been operating a 1,000 ton per day mining operation to find economic means of recovering oil from shale on a commercial basis. The results of this mining project indicate that oil shale recovery is now technologically feasible. Some observations are made concerning the results of this project. Other topics covered include handling of rock underground, retorting process, the availability of water, pollution problems, and recoverable reserves. TOSCO intends to have a full scale plant in operation by 1970. This plant will be designed to process 66,000 tons per day of shale having a yield of 42,000 bbl of oil daily.
