Feature article:The Rocky Mountain region of the U.S. is rich in vital energy and mineral resources, including coal, oil, and uranium. Rapid development of these resources could greatly strengthen the U.S. energy base and diversify the economy of the mountain states, generating new jobs and economic potential. However, rapid development without adequate regard for the great scenic beauty, serious environmental constraints (such as limited water resources), and quality of life of the mountain states could be disasterous. Furthermore, westerners are involved in a large-scale battle to transfer development rights from the federal government, which currently owns and controls most of the land in the Rocky Mountain region, to the state governments. The outcome of this battle will have important implications for the future development of natural resources in this region.
