In this review the evaluation of the valence state of ions of rare earth elements in binary inorganic compounds with group I-VII elements is given on the basis of the crystallochemical properties and analysis of the dependence of the size of the unit cells on the ionic radii of the trivalent rare-earth elements. We assume that the rare-earth elements to which the deviation in the linear trend of the dependence of the lattice periods from the ionic radius of Ln/sup 3 +/ corresponds exist in states with intermediate valence (IV). The ions of rare-earth elements in inorganic compounds display a completely definite deviation from the characteristic oxidation state 3+ (either 2+ or 4+). A regular deviation of the oxidation states (states with variable valence) of the ions of rare-earth elements in conformity with a periodic change in the structures of the electron shells of the atoms of rare-earth elements was established.
