Superconductivity in the system Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 2-//sub x/La/sub x/CuO/sub 6+//sub delta/: Hole formation by (LaO)/sup +/

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
Superconductivity with a T/sub c/ as high as 25.5 K has been observed in Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/CuO/sub 6/ by partial substitution of Sr by La. Superconductivity is limited to a range of 10% to 38% substitution. In Bi/sub 2/Sr/sub 2-//sub x/La/sub x/CuO/sub 6+//sub delta/ each La atom introduces one additional O atom into the crystal resulting in delta = x. Thereby one extra hole per substituted Sr atom is produced. We discuss the probable crystallographic site of the additional oxygen atoms with respect to the oxidation states of bismuth and copper in these compounds.
