Discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the Bi-Sr-Cu-O system and identification of the 20-K superconducting phase as Bi{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}CuO{sub 6} were followed by observation of high-T{sub c} properties in a family of compounds with the general formula Bi{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}Ca{sub n-1}Cu{sub n}O{sub 2n+4} and led to intensive study of these compounds, including the first member of the series. In this work, the authors prepared quaternary oxides represented by the general formula Bi{sub 2}Ba{sub 2-x}M{sub x}CuO{sub 6+{delta}} (x=0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20; M = Sr, Ru, Rh, Pd, In, Sb, Pb) and studied their structure by X-ray diffraction in order to assess the effects of various substitutions at the barium site on the unit-cell parameters of the solid solutions and to try to impart metallic properties to the parent, dielectric compound.
