Shadowing of virtual photons

Preliminary results for the virtual photon total cross section on carbon, copper and lead targets are presented. The data were obtained in a 209 GeV muon scattering experiment at Fermilab. For absolute photon invariant mass, Q/sup 2/ of less than 1.0 (GeV)/sup 2/ shadowing occurs; the cross section per nucleon decreases as the size of the nucleus increases. Above Q/sup 2/ = 1.0 (GeV)/sup 2/ the shadowing diminishes.
