The effect of nucleon shadowing in the interaction of high energy (10--10/sup 6/ GeV) real and virtual photons with nuclei is studied in detail. The calculations are performed using the optical model of the nucleus and an off-diagonal generalized vector-dominance model taking into account the growth of hadron cross sections with energy, the rho-meson finite-width corrections, as well as the contributions of the families of all the known vector mesons. The influence of the real parts of the hadronic amplitudes on the magnitude of the shadowing effect is analyzed in detail. On the basis of the results, the integrated over Q/sup 2/ cross section of high-energy (up to 10/sup 6/ GeV) muon-nucleus inelastic scattering is calculated. Simple approximation formulae which have a clear physical interpretation are proposed for all the calculated dependences.
