Florida's Jay field sets US onshore pace

Jay field, Florida's giant, is the focal point of onshore activity in the U.S. today. Operators are attempting some 8,500 bpd of 50$ API crude by late this year and 50,000 bpd by mid-1972. Operators will not divulge reserve estimates, but it appears that they may reach or top 250 million bbl. The current producing rate is limited by capacity of crude-treating facilities to handle the dissolved hydrogen sulfide. Combined capacity of the 2 plants now on stream is only 8,500 bpd, but an additional 61,600 bpd of capacity is now under construction or being designed. The reservoir is Smackover Dolomite ranging in oil-pay thickness from 50 to 250 ft with wide variation between offsets. The average porosity is difficult to express because of its wide variance from well to well and from bottom to top of reservoir. The reservoir is stratigraphically controlled. Productive limits are not yet completely defined, but operators' consensus is that it will take more than 50 wells for complete development. When interest in the area picked up, a drilling unit was formed to put down the exploratory well. This well, operated by Humble discovered the Jay field and started an active drilling program. As of mid-Nov., the field has 24 completions and 11 drilling locations. The well completion program is described.
