The young Jurassic province of SW. Alabama and the Florida Panhandle soon will be producing in excess of 110,000 bpd of crude and condensate and several hundred million cubic feet of gas daily. These production rates have been reached in less than 6 yr, in spite of environmental obstacles. The Smackover-Norphlet oil and gas is loaded with sulfur, but special equipment and procedures have been installed to handle the production. Government agencies, environmental groups, and operators themselves have held tight reins on development to insure that farmlands, timberlands, and the Escambia River are not damaged by operations in the 5 new fields. Jay-Little Escambia Creek field, where the bulk of the area's reserves lie, is producing 93,500 bpd, the design capacity of the five sulfur-removal plants-and about 100 MMcfd of gas. Production has been raised by more than 10,000 bpd, since water injection began in early April. A $10-million gas-liquids plant is the latest project in the field. Davy Powergas Inc. is building the plant adjacent to Jay's central production facilities. Input capacity will be 90 MMcfd and output 16,630 bod of products and 60 MMcfd of residue gas.
