Insulation system for liquefied gas tanks

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6328186
Conch L.N.G.'s insulation system for LNG tanks achieves a considerable cost saving by replacing the expensive conventional frame of load-bearing insulation located at tank corners with a resilient, partially cylindrical plate of the same material as the container. The cylindrical plate is welded across the corners of the container to form a concave surface, over which foam is applied in sprayed layers. The edges of the foam are anchored by reinforcement mesh bonded to the inner face of the foam, the mesh extending over the edges of the foam and being bonded by adhesive into the shell corners. A coving laid across each corner is bonded to the inner faces of the adjacent wall areas. Further foamed insulation is then built up behind the coving to the required thickness.
