Process and apparatus for stripping solids from bituminous sand

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6327940
A process and apparatus for the recovery of bitumen from bituminous sand utilize a flotation gas which is passed through a bituminous sand slurry. In the process, a slurry of bituminous sand is introduced into the upper portion of an inverted-cone-shaped flotation tank (or ''stripper'') containing a column of water. The slurry may be formed by any conventional means such as adding water or an organic solvent for the bitumen to the bituminous sand and agitating the mixture, preferably in contact with air. Due to the temperature of the slurry or the mixing and agitating of it in contact with air, the slurry forms a froth upon entering the column of water in the stripper. The froth rises within the column of water to form a layer. Preferably the process is continuous. The sand content of the bituminous sand slurry proceeds by gravity to pass downward in the stripper, as well as fines and particles of bitumen which have not formed froth.
