We have obtained the contributions of individual mechanisms to the production of cumulative protons in C interactions at 5 GeV/c in the framework of the cascade-evaporative model. Independently we have evaluated from experiment the contribution of the reaction ''d'' parrow-down/sub back/ p to the production of cumulative protons sigma = 1.5 +- 0.4 mb. We have obtained the separation angle of the two protons (one of which is emitted into the backward hemisphere in the lab) as a function of the sum of their kinetic energies T/sub 2p/ in pion-carbon and pion-Freon (A-barroughly-equal24) interactions. In the region 0.19 < T/sub 2p/ < 0.26 GeV we observe a characteristic maximum due to the absorption of slow pions.
