This paper summarises the experience gained with the driving of 84-inch diameter open-ended pipe piles with Menck underwater (MHU 1700) and above water (Menck 12500) hammers at the South Brae platform in the U.K. sector of the North Sea. Thirty-two out of the total thirty-six piles installed were driven with the Menck underwater hammer, MHU 1700. The remaining four piles were driven with the Menck 12500 hammer operating above water. The piles driven with the Menck 12500 hammer were instrumented with strain gauges to measure the force-time pulse and accelerations near the head of the topmost pile follower. The pile driving logs and the pile instrumentation data were analysed to estimate: (a) Soil Resistance during Driving (SRD). (b) The relative performance of the underwater and above water hammers, and (c) The difference between the predicted and back-analysed values of SRD. The above-mentioned estimates are presented in this paper along with relevant geotechnical information. Conclusions and recommendations are included following discussions relating to the interpretation of results.
