North Sea report. Brae project remains on course

After a lengthy exploration and appraisal program through much of the past 10 years, Marathon Oil UK Ltd. is moving toward first production from the Brae area in July, 1983. Geologic frustrations gradually are giving way to an understanding of the complicated reservoirs in block 16/7A. It is becoming clear that Brae could become one of the North Sea's major production complexes during the next 10 to 15 years. Hookup is under way on the South Brae platform. The 21,400-ton steel jacket is one of the heaviest ever built for the UK sector. In what is described as the first time underwater hammers were used so extensively, piling was completed by the semisubmersible barge Hermod in a total of 11 days. The South Brae project as a whole is on budget and slightly ahead of schedule.
