Investigation of the reduction of hydrogenating components in aluminum-nickel-molybdenum hydrodesulfurization catalysts by ESR

Aluminum-nickel-molybdenum hydrodesulfurization catalysts reduced by hydrogen in the 100 to 600/sup 0/C temperature range have been investigated by ESR and ferromagnetic resonance. The most intense ESR signals of Mo/sup 5 +/ ions were observed in the catalysts reduced at 350/sup 0/C. The intensity of the Mo/sup 5 +/ signals decreases with increasing NiO content in the catalysts. It has been shown that finely divided nickel forms along with the ferromagnetic phase of metallic nickel upon reduction. The influence of MoO/sub 3/ on the reduction processes of nickel and the size of the metal particles formed has been established. It has been postulated that metallic nickel is formed as a result of the reduction of surface nickel molybdates.
