This report focuses on the characteristics of formation of Mo/sup 5 +/ ions in reduced ANM catalysts of various compositions in relation to their activity in the hydrogenolysis of thiophene. Results indicated that there is a correlation between the activity of ANM hydrorefining catalysts and the intensity of ESR signals of Mo/sup 5 +/ ions in them after reduction by hydrogen in the temperature range 350-450/sup 0/C. Data on the intensity of ESR signals of Mo/sup 5 +/ ions provide the possibility of comparative estimation of the activities of ANM catalysts in hydrogenation of thiophene. Also, results show that stable activity of ANM catalysts in hydrogenation of thiophene is determined by the amount of nickel-molybdenum surface oxide compounds formed during synthesis of the catalysts.
