Witnesses for the coal industry, coal miners, basic industries, and representatives of government testified at a hearing on how steam coal imports, specifically the entry of Colombia in the coal export market, will affect domestic production and employment. At the request of DOE, a report linking US rail rates with coal prices was placed on the record, but there was no agreement on the relevance of rail rates to whether or not domestic coal can remain competitive. A factor in the extent of potential market penetration of imported coal is the number of power plants located near ports whose long-term supply contracts will expire in the next few years. A spokesman for the mine workers emphasized the lack of a commitment to serve American interests of multinational corporations. Two appendices with responses and additional materials submitted for the record follows the statements and testimony of 14 witnesses.
