High-pressure phase transitions in transition-metal trifluorides

This paper reports on studies which have resulted in data on the phase transformations of transition-metal trifluorides at normal and elevated pressures which have been used in the construction of generalized p-T phase diagrams. These phase diagrams enable the forecast of the behavior of the required phases, in particular, of systems in response to pressure and temperature. Possible behavior of these compounds under pressure include: the melting points of modifications with comparatively open structures of type ..cap alpha..-UO/sub 3/ should fall on compression, while those of modifications with structures of ..beta..-YF/sub 3/ and tysonite types should increase; the anomalous course of the melting curves for the ..cap alpha.. phases provides expansion of their stability regions on the p-T diagrams on going to the trifluorides of elements with smaller ionic radii; and the maximum entropy occurs in the solid phases for the ..cap alpha.. state.
