Thermodynamics of the lanthanide trifluorides. IV. The heat capacities of gadolinium trifluoride GdF/sub 3/, lutetium trifluoride LuF/sub 3/, and yttrium trifluoride YF/sub 3/ from 5 to 350/sup 0/K

The heat capacities of three isostructural trifluorides GdF/sub 3/, LuF/sub 3/, and YF/sub 3/ were determined from 5 to 350/sup 0/K by adiabatic calorimetry. Below 15/sup 0/K GdF/sub 3/ contained an excess heat capacity contribution over the usual lattice heat capacity; LuF/sub 3/ and YF/sub 3/ showed no unusual heat capacities over the entire temperature range. Results in tabular form which list the heat capacity C/sup 0//sub p/, the entropy S/sup 0/, the enthalpy (H/sup 0/(T)-H/sup 0/(0)), and the Planck function -(G/sup 0/(T)-H/sup 0/(T))/T are given for the three trifluorides. Also presented are recommended thermochemical functions at 298.15/sup 0/K and tables of recommended high-temperature thermodynamic functions from 400/sup 0/K to the melting temperatures. The excess entropy associated with GdF/sub 3/ is discussed and values of the lattice heat capacity of GdF/sub 3/ below 15/sup 0/K are estimated.
