Some drilling statistics are listed by areas and by individual fields for the U.S. and for some selected foreign countries, cost data are given for some of the more important productive areas. Drilling activity in the U.S. continues to lag behind the bad year of 1966 with few corners of the oil country showing completion increases. Total well completions as of Sept. 1 stood at 20,482 wells, down considerably from the comparable 1966 period. Total oil wells amounted to 9,389, gas wells 2,274, and dry holes 7,951. Wildcatters found 632 new oil pools, 330 new gas fields, and dug 4,394 wildcat failures. Total footage continues to suffer also with only 88.4 million ft of hole drilled. Exploratory drilling plunged in the first half to 3,956 from 4,628, down 14.5%. Exploration success ratio slipped to 18.5 from 20.3% last year. Exploratory completions of 8,578 are expected for the year, down 1,735. Field- development completions totaled 11,322 in the first half, down only moderately. There are 2 important shifts in the making in drilling. The type of wells to be drilled has changed, with more emphasis on field- development work and less wildcatting and less deep drilling.
