The purpose of this paper is to present a review and status report of the rapidly developing surface science of heterogeneous catalysis. The authors describe the experimental results that identified three molecular ingredients of catalysis: structure, carbonaceous deposit, and the oxidation state of surface atoms. The hydrogenation of ethylene at both the gas-solid and liquid-solid interfaces is described.
